At Mandalay Road … Zin is our Thing

Mandalay Road ZinfandelZinfandel is the major red wine grape variety grown in California. Introduced to the United States almost 200 years ago, it was until recently, considered a “Californian variety”. However new DNA research has proven it to be identical to Italian Primitivo and also genetically linked it to the Croatian grape called Crljenak kastelanski (sirl-yen-ack kastenlanski). It is now known that Zinfandel originated on Croatia's Dalmation coast. It probably found its way to the Americas in the early 1800's, when Croatia was part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, via cuttings of Crljenak taken from the palace gardens in Vienna.

Surprisingly, Zinfandel is little grown in Australia, perhaps because it requires intensive vine and bunch management to achieve optimum wine potential. Despite this, there are several fine examples of Australian Zin that rival the best of this variety produced in California. At Mandalay Road we think we have one of these. In fact, we have just started exporting the first cases of our 2006 vintage to California where it has received excellent acceptance. Coal to Newcastle!

Zinfandel produces a wide range of wine styles varying from white bubblies through to rich fortified ports. In Australia, and at Mandalay Road, the focus is on producing full bodied fruit-driven table wines. The nose and palate of these wines is often characterized by berry fruits such blackberries and raspberries together with nuances of plums and prunes.

Mandalay Road Zin is a deep crimson with a ruby red hue and a lifted and aromatic nose of cherry and cranberry fruit coupled with complex cigar box and leather aromas. The palate is full and the mouth-feel luscious with syrupy black fruit and well-integrated toasted oak flavours. The tannins gently coat the tongue while the flavours are persistent and linger on the palate. Our Zin can be enjoyed now and will continue to develop over the next 3-5 years.
